I would suggest giving yourself a couple days time to redo any that don’t cook well and I would test out cooking them before you decide if this project is for you. I also want to start by saying these are not the easiest project in the world – especially if they don’t work as planned. We wrote on the shiney side, not the frosted side.Either way, clear or frosted they will still look adorable! We used the same pack of shrink paper on all of our projects. Give yourself a couple days to do these just in case you need to redo one so you have time to have the student rewrite their name. This will happen on longer item and random ones. The moment the heat escapes the oven they start cooling. If that happens and it does not correct itself, open the oven and flatten it out super quick. Sometimes they will curl over and overlap.I think this kind of sealing is more appropriate for painted projects. We used Modge Podge and it distorted some of the marker images. Let them keep cooking because after they curl, the flatten out on their own in the oven. I freaked out and took them out and tried to flatten them. Tips and tricks and frequently asked questions, don’t make the mistakes I made. We pushed a towel over them when they came out and cooled so they were super flat.Ĭheck out our Facebook video to see them actually shrink and keep reading for our tips, tricks, and FAQ! (Be sure to like, comment, or share the video so your friends see it). Remove from the oven and let them cool. Some took 2 minutes, some took 3 and there was no rhyme or reason why. Place on cookie sheet and cook for 2-3 minutes.(I put parchment paper for the photo, but the directions said parchment not foil so both worked for us). We used a cookie sheet with tin foil on it.Of course, follow the directions on the package for your shrink film, but here is what we did. Dow Chemical is attempting to exit the market as well, since styrene demand has gone down in the past two years (due to companies switching to more easily-recyclable materials either intentionally or because of bans on the material) and companies in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have access to cheaper feedstock for making styrene. To bake them is so simple I actually made a bigger deal out of this than I originally needed to. Polystyrene is identified with the number 6 resin code and is not commonly or easily recycled.Īccording to Bloomberg, BASF is looking to turn its styrene division into a joint venture before leaving the styrene market altogether. Styrene is used to make polystyrene, which can take the form of expanded polystyrene foam (commonly referred to as styrofoam) or more rigid plastic packaging. The new plastic containers (below) for crop protection products are lighter, made with 25 percent less plastic and are only made with one type of plastic in order to make recycling easier.Īs BASF delves more into applications for biodegradable materials and other greener packaging choices, it is also pulling out of the styrene market. If feedback is positive, all nets will come in the biodegradable packaging.Īnother packaging change, though not a biodegradable one, is coming to products sold by BASF Crop Protection in Europe. BASF is first trialing the new packaging with several thousand nets. Ecovio FS Shrink Film contains 66 percent bio-based materials, and Ecovio FS Paper contains 75 percent of the same.īASF is also launching biodegradable packaging for its Interceptor insecticide-treated mosquito nets, one of the changes suggested by partners that utilize the nets to combat malaria in African countries. Ecovio FS is made of BASF's biodegradable polyester Ecoflex FS and corn starch-based polylactic acid. The items, which will be on the market in early 2010, join the company's already-existing Ecovio product line, biodegrade faster than previous products in compost settings and contain more renewable materials. The products are named Ecovio FS Paper and Ecovio FS Shrink Film, respectively. The company's new Ecovio FS biodegradable plastic is initially being developed as a paper coating (such as for paper cups, shown below right) and a shrink film (left). As part of its effort to offer more specialized biodegradable products, BASF has launched new biodegradable paper coating, shrink film and packaging.
